SACO — A 61-year-old Saco man was taken into custody Thursday, Sept. 1, after police received several calls of shots being fired in the area of 139 Millliken Mills Road the previous day.

Police allege James Townsend discharged a firearm inside the home when it was occupied.

Townsend was arrested by Saco Police and charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, discharging a firearm near a dwelling and violating conditions of release.

“Mr. Townsend was using a firearm, discharging the firearm inside of the residence while it was occupied, on at least two occasions,” said Deputy Police Chief Corey Huntress.

Police Chief Jack Clements said police obtained an arrest warrant for Townsend and a search warrant for his 139 Milliken Mills Road property.

“Due to the severity of the crimes at hand, the Saco Police Department requested the assistance of the Southern Maine Special Response Team and the Cumberland County Emergency Services Unit for service of the warrants,” Clements wrote in a news release. “Within a matter of minutes, Townsend was taken into custody.”

He was taken to York County Jail in Alfred, and held in lieu of $10,000  bail.

Saco Police said the violation of conditions of release charge stems from charges of arson, violation of a protection from abuse order and criminal threatening that are alleged to have taken place in June. Further information was not available.
