Police say a South Portland High School student was dragged for about half a mile after his hand became stuck in the door of a vehicle that then drove off Monday afternoon.
The male student, who was not run over by the car, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, South Portland police Chief Daniel J. Ahern said in a release.
Police said the student was being dropped off at his home by a female classmate around 4 p.m. Monday when his hand became stuck in the door of her vehicle as it drove off. The female student drove for about a half mile before she realized what had happened. The student was dragged from Scamman Street to Stillman Street.
“The male was not run over by the vehicle, but he did sustain non-life threatening injuries,” Ahern said.
He was transported by South Portland Fire & Rescue to Maine Medical Center for treatment. Parents of both students were contacted.
The incident remains under investigation, but police said charges appear unlikely.
