As a mother who has been trying to teach my children ways we can treat everyone with respect, dignity and equality, there is a new opportunity to model this – support our Wabanaki neighbors.

The Advancing Equality for Wabanaki Nations Act was sponsored by Rep. Jared Golden and has passed the House with bipartisan support. This common-sense legislation seeks to extend the benefits of federal laws enacted to support tribal communities within U.S. borders to our Wabanaki tribes, who have been excluded since the 1980 Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act. This bill will allow our Maine tribes to access support and be treated as equals to all the other federally recognized tribes across the country.

As it comes to the Senate, I urge Sen. Angus King and Sen. Susan Collins to support legislation that puts Wabanaki tribes on equal footing, and I urge readers to contact our senators to support this measure. Please show support and respect for our Wabanaki neighbors and friends. Strengthening their families strengthens our whole Maine community.
