Many pause at this time of year to give thanks for food, family, friends, health and other blessings. This year I can’t stop adding electricity, heat, water and sewage to the list.

Due to relentless targeted missile attacks by Russia’s military forces, millions of Ukrainians find themselves in freezing temperatures without heat or electricity; no doubt some will die. Inflicting medieval conditions on a sovereign nation in order to break its people’s will to remain independent is horrifying and unacceptable.

My Thanksgiving now includes gratitude for political and community leaders who are willing to extend help in ways that can help Ukrainians of all ages stay alive, warm and safe. I emphatically support the foreign aid we and Europe are sending to Ukraine during these excruciating times.
