Re: A Nov. 21 Portland Press Herald article, “Whole Foods to stop selling Maine lobster following fishery’s loss of 2 sustainability labels”:
By enacting its free market choice to stop selling lobster, Whole Foods is doing its part to save whales from extinction. Entanglement from lobster fishing gear is one of the biggest threats to aquatic life and our fragile ecosystem.
While lobsters look different from humans, they are intelligent, complex animals that use complicated signals to explore their surrounding and establish social relationships. And, just like people, lobsters have a sophisticated nervous system that enables them to feel pain. There is no humane way to kill these sensitive, fascinating beings. Lobsters suffer when torn apart or boiled alive.
Kudos to Whole Foods for putting our planet ahead of profit.
