Lucy Norvell
Lucy Norvell has been hired as the new executive director for Maine Summer Camps. She was selected by a unanimous vote, and she will officially assume the position in early 2023.
Matt Pines, MSC president, said “It has been a long but gratifying process, and we are confident that we attracted a candidate who brings to the table a tremendous depth of experience, excellent qualifications and expertise, and a long history of loving summer camp.”
With a career spanning three decades, including most recently with the Scarborough Public Library and 15 years with American Camp Association (ACA), New England, Norvell’s experience is both broad and deep and will inform her work at MSC, including policy management, human resources, camper experience and education, as well as coordination with all the allied associations that help camps function.
In addition to serving as director of development and communications, director of public information, and parent education manager at ACA, New England, her experience includes being an assistant camp director, a founding manager of a Northern Kentucky childcare resource agency, a development and communications specialist at the Center for Grieving Children in Portland and the coordinator of programming and communication at the Scarborough Public Library.
“The ED position at MSC represents the culmination of my professional experience,” Norvell said. “I am certain what I’ve learned in every professional position will benefit me in this role.”
“I am excited for our membership to get to know Lucy, for Lucy to become familiar with all the member camps, and for MSC to continue providing dynamic leadership to the Maine, regional, and national camping communities,” said Pines.
During the search process, Norvell expressed her thoughts about MSC’s role as a membership organization, describing it “as serving its members extremely well and evolving to meet the needs of camp professionals.” She also spoke to the importance of a “growth mindset.”
“Often discussed in business and education circles – this concept is nothing new to camps,” she said. “When people are actively learning and invited to grow and change, it brings out the most wonderful qualities in people.”
Norvell also praised Ron Hall who is retiring from the ED position. “Ron is amazing, just an extraordinary human being. His are hard shoes to fill…no one can be Ron Hall, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
Maine Summer Camps is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with more than 140 member camps and adventure programs. Its mission is to support and promote meaningful developmental, educational, environmental, and recreational experiences for children. By using its online presence, publications, trainings, and conferences, MSC enhances the public’s understanding of the value of Maine camps. It also assists camp and business members by offering a broad range of information, including directories, resources, legislative and regulatory news, and social media resources.
