While I am writing this, residents of southern California are experiencing winter and all the unusual weather that comes with it. For us here in Maine, I just read the Portland Press Herald’s Feb. 24 front-page article about a legislative proposal to create a state law making the removal of snow and ice from our vehicle’s windshield, roof, trunk and hood mandatory.

I had a hair-raising nighttime event, back in early 2019, while driving south on Interstate 295 from Brunswick to Westbrook. While approaching the Desert Road exit and overpass in Freeport, in my Ford 2015 F-150, I noticed a commercial 18-wheel tractor-trailer coming down the southbound on-ramp ahead of me. I prepared to move to the left, to give the driver room, when all 53 feet of frozen snow and ice suddenly flew off of the top of his trailer toward me and a driver behind me.

For a terrifying 10 to 15 seconds, I was completely “blind.” I broke out into the clear as I signaled to pass the left side of the tractor-trailer and saw the “53” on the trailer and the color of the tractor pulling it with the company logo – a three-letter logo known across our country.

I am a staunch supporter of this proposed legislation being passed for all vehicle drivers, including commercial vehicles.
