Dorothy Virginia (Jones) Gallagher Larson

SCARBOROUGH – Dorothy Virginia (Jones) Gallagher Larson, mother to Hope Gallagher Ogletree, Brooks Gallagher, and Whit Gallagher, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023 after a long and happy life. Her final moments were spent peacefully in her assisted living home at Piper Shores Community in Scarborough, accompanied by her daughter, Hope Gallagher Ogletree and beloved daughter-in-law, Jane Gallagher.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Jan. 15, 1928, to Edward Henry Jones and Ella Francis Joubin, the youngest child of four siblings reaching adulthood, her life journey took her many places, including: Amherst, Mass.; Riverdale, N.Y.; Riverside, Conn..; Hobe Sound, Fla.; North Waterboro, before her final home within the Piper Shores community.

Her career encompassed all aspects of fashion from modeling, to designing, to sewing at the couturier level, to window dressing to making beloved garments for her children, several of which have been enjoyed by her grandchildren-including impressive Halloween costumes!

Active in every community in which she lived, her Episcopal faith informed her volunteerism as an altar guild member in every church in which she was a member. A member of the Junior Women’s Club in Greenwich, Conn. Dorothy utilized her multiple skills as the advertising director for the Link Magazine. The Girl Scouts and the Cub Scouts also benefited from her creativity. As a working mother, she devoted herself to her children’s activities as fully as she was able.

Known for her tenacity and love of life, Dorothy thrived when being outside whether gardening or, in former years, participating in athletic pursuits including golf and tennis. She loved being near the water and taking walks on Scarborough beaches, in Ogunquit, or long paddles and swims at the lake were a priority. Most importantly, her seven grandchildren were her passion and she had unique and meaningful relationships with each of them.

Since arriving at Piper Shores 10-plus years ago, Dorothy created long-lasting and deep relationships with her community. She will be dearly missed by her many friends and all who knew her; the outpouring of devotion from the Holbrook staff who loved her was a testament to her lasting impact on this community.

Dorothy’s family will remember her for the love and joy she created for her grandchildren, especially the years at Lake Arrowhead and the many times around campfires on her island, lobster feasts and grandchildren running freely enjoying the lake and all of the adventures their grandmother created.

She is survived by her three children, Hope (John Ogletree), Brooks (Liz Gallagher) and Whit (Jane Gallagher) and their children,

Rev. Andrew W. Ogletree and Travis Long, Heather J. Ogletree and Cmdr. Ned Breen, Dr. Jacob R. Gallagher and Stephanie McAleer, Bartholomew W. Gallagher, Nathanael R. Gallagher, Meredith E. Gallagher, Jack Gallagher.

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at St. Albans Episcopal Church, 885 Shore Rd. in Cape Elizabeth on Sunday, March 12 at 1:30 p.m.

Arrangements are with Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
