The Maine Mariners fell behind 5-0 in the first period and lost 7-3 to the South Carolina Stingrays in an ECHL game Saturday night in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Maine scored three power-play goals – two by Andrew Peski and one by Cam Askew.
BASEBALL
MAJOR LEAGUES: The New York Yankees could be opening the season without three-fifths of their projected starting rotation.
Right-hander Luis Severino has a low-grade lat strain, Yankees Manager Aaron Boone told reporters Saturday, putting the two-time All-Star at risk of starting the season on the injured list.
Boone expressed optimism this wouldn’t be a long-term issue but acknowledged that Severino “most likely” would get placed on the injured list.
The Yankees already won’t have right-hander Frankie Montas or left-hander Carlos Rodón for the start of the season.
TENNIS
MIAMI OPEN: Coco Gauff let a big lead slip away and dropped the last five games of a mistake-filled 6-7 (8), 7-5, 6-2 loss to Anastasia Potapova in the third round.
Gauff, the No. 6 seed, served for the match at 5-3 in the second set. But she eased up and Potapova, seeded 27th, became more aggressive in their lengthy baseline back-and-forths.
In the men’s draw, No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the third round when Richard Gasquet withdrew before they were scheduled to play because of an injured ankle.
AUTO RACING
XFINITY SERIES: A.J. Allmendinger dominated early, then had to fight to retake the lead at the start of the final stage at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, as he earned his 11th career NASCAR Xfinity series road course victory.
Allmendinger bumped Sheldon Creed out of the lead with 14 laps to go, then held off William Byron over the next couple of laps before pulling away.
FORMULA ONE: Retired Formula One champion Nelson Piquet has been ordered by a Brazilian court to pay $950,000 in “moral damages” for making racist and homophobic comments about Lewis Hamilton.
The 70-year-old Brazilian referred to seven-time champion Hamilton as “neguinho,” a racially offensive term that means “little Black guy,” in 2021. In another interview, Piquet used racist and homophobic language.
The court in Brasilia on Friday ordered Piquet to pay 5 million Brazilian reals “in collective moral damages, to be allocated to funds for the promotion of racial equality and against discrimination of the LGBTQIA+ community.”
GOLF
LPGA: Celine Boutier of France had an eagle and six birdies in a round of 7-under 65 and moved atop the leaderboard when Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand stumbled down the stretch in the third round of the LPGA Drive on Championship in Gold Canyon, Arizona.
Jutanugarn (69), American Alison Lee (67) and South Korea’s Hae Ran Ryu (64) were tied for second at 15 under, one behind Boutier.
PGA: Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark played bogey-free for a 6-under 66 and shared the lead with PGA Tour rookie Sam Stevens in the Corales Punta Cana Championship in the Dominican Republic.
Stevens shot a 68 to match Hojgaard at 14-under 202, one shot ahead of a large group that includes 36-hole leader Matt Wallace of England.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Alexander Knappe overtook fellow German Nick Bachem to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Jonsson Workwear Open in Johannesburg as he chases a first European tour title.
Knappe moved to 17 under overall by shooting a 7-under 65. Bachem, who led by one after the second round, dropped into a four-way tie for second after a 69. Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren (63), South Africa’s Hennie du Plessis (65) and Malaysia’s Gavin Green (67) were also at 16 under.
FOOTBALL
NFL: Bobby Wagner is headed back to the Seattle Seahawks, agreeing to a one-year deal to rejoin the team with which he became one of the NFL’s top linebackers.
The NFL Network and ESPN said the deal is worth up to $7 million.
• The Green Bay Packers re-signed a key special teams player, linebacker Eric Wilson.
Wilson had 13 special-teams tackles last season to tie for the team lead. He played 13 games for the Packers, who signed him off the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad on Oct. 4.
SOCCER
EURO 2024 QUALIFYING: Spain got off to a winning start under its new coach, Luis de la Fuente, beating visiting Norway 3-0 to open its qualifying campaign for the 2024 European Championship.
Dani Olmo scored in the first half and debutant Joselu came off the bench late to add two quick goals against a Norway squad that was without star forward Erling Haaland because of a groin injury.
FIGURE SKATING
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Shoma Uno prevailed in a quad showdown in the free skate in Saitama, Japan, to become the first Japanese man to defend his title at the world championships.
Uno attempted five quadruple jumps and landed all of them except the quad salchow, which he under-rotated, for a total of 301.14 points.
South Korean’s Cha Jun-hwan was second with 296.03 points, followed by American teenager Ilia Malinin, who became the first skater to land a quadruple axel at the world championships and finished with 288.44 points.
Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the United States won their first ice dancing title.
First after the rhythm dance, Chock and Bates finished first in the free dance with 134.07 points for a total of 226.1.
Reigning European champions Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri of Italy were second with 219.85 points, while Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada were third with 217.88.
