Josh Polchies was 2 for 3 with a double and three runs scored, and Ethan Hendry hit a two-run double as Falmouth picked up a 7-2 win over Thornton Academy in a Class A South baseball game Thursday in Saco.

The Navigators (1-1) struck for three runs in the first inning against Thornton ace Josh Kopetski, who gave up four runs – two earned – in five innings.

Falmouth pitcher Brennan Rumpf took a shutout into the sixth inning and finished with seven strikeouts in six innings. He allowed just three hits, one walk and one run.

Henry Lausier and Josh Penney each hit a double for Thornton (2-1), the reigning Class A champion.

MARSHWOOD 6, GORHAM 4: The Hawks (2-0) broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run fifth inning as they beat the Rams (1-1) in South Berwick.

Ronan Garrett hit a two-run double and Ben Garrepy singled home two runs for Marshwood. Garrett also earned a save with two perfect innings in relief of Charlie Hudson.

Brady Wintle went 2 for 3 with a solo home run and an RBI single for Gorham. Wyatt Nadeau hit a two-run single.

SCARBOROUGH 3, BIDDEFORD 1: Lewis Moynihan singled home the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, and Erik Swenson held Biddeford to four hits over 61/3 innings as the Red Storm (2-0) beat the Tigers (0-2) in Biddeford.

Swenson allowed an unearned run on an RBI single by Landon Sirois in the third inning. He finished with seven strikeouts, and Zakary Sanders retired the final two batters for the save.

Ashton Blanchette got two of Scarborough’s five hits off Biddeford pitcher Gavin Haggett.

SANFORD 5, KENNEBUNK 0: Tanner McCann and Beckett Barlow combined on a four-hitter as the Spartans (2-0) shut out the Rams (1-1) in Kennebunk.

Sanford took the lead with three runs in the first inning, including an RBI single by Alex Sevigny. Sevigny and Caden Fontaine each finished with two hits for the Spartans.

Jack Kennie and losing pitcher Drew Slikowski each hit a double for Kennebunk.

SOUTH PORTLAND 6, MASSABESIC 0: Andrew Heffernan pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks as the Red Riots (2-1) shut out the Mustangs (0-2) in Waterboro.

Heffernan also helped South Portland grab a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. He singled home Johnny Poole, then scored on a single by Richie Gilboy.

The Red Riots broke it open with four runs in the seventh.

Aaron Kiss took the loss despite allowing just three hits and striking out nine.

WINDHAM 3, CHEVERUS 0: Brady Harvie racked up 10 strikeouts while going the distance as the Eagles (1-1) blanked the Stags (1-1) in Windham.

SOFTBALL

WINDHAM 10, NOBLE 0: Brooke Gerry struck out 14 and allowed just two hits in a six-inning win for the Eagles (3-0) over the Knights (1-1) in Windham.

Stella Jarvais went 4 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Kennedy Kimball hit a three-run single and Reilly Russell launched a home run.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

GREELY 14, WINDHAM 4: Allie Read scored five goals and Charlotte Taylor notched three goals and three assists to lead the Rangers (4-1) past the Eagles (3-2) in Windham.

Lauren Dennen and Jane Flynn chipped in with two goals apiece.

Abby Trainor, Ashley Clark, Mallory Muse and Neve Ledbetter scored Windham.

YORK 15, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER/POLAND 2: Ava Fontaine scored four goals to lead the Wildcats (1-1) past the 26ers (0-3) in Gray.

Grace Clayton chipped in with three goals, Sophia Luchette and Olivia Coite tallied two apiece, and Abigail Armlin, Emma Joyce, Reese Walenta and Gabby Balbadis each scored once for York.

Lexi Wallingford and Ellie Steele scored for the 26ers.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 15, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER/POLAND 2: James Brogan-Provencher and Brayden Warde combined for nine goals and nine assists as the Panthers (2-1) cruised to a win over the 26ers (2-2) in Yarmouth.

Brogan-Provencher tallied five goals and four assists, while Warde had four goals and five assists.
