Former Bonny Eagle standout Jacob Humphrey hit a two-run homer in the first game of a doubleheader and scored the winning run after stealing two bases in Game 2 as the UMass Lowell baseball team earned a split against the University of Maine with a 2-1 victory Friday afternoon in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Colin Plante hit a grand slam as Maine (22-15, 12-2 America East) won the opener, 8-4. Connor Goodman was 3 for 4 with two RBI for the Black Bears.

Humphrey’s home run in the fifth inning was his fifth of the season.

Maine tied Game 2 on a sacrifice fly by Dean O’Neill in the top of the seventh. But the River Hawks (13-27, 6-11) regained the lead in the bottom half when Humphrey singled with one out, stole second and third, and then raced home on a wild pitch.

USM SWEEPS KEENE STATE: Bryce Afthim pitched a three-hitter in Game 1, and the Huskies (14-17, 9-4 Little East) finished the day with 27 hits while sweeping a doubleheader from the Owls (13-22, 3-10) in Keene, New Hampshire, 6-0 and 10-6.

Afthim struck out eight and walked one in his second straight complete game and fourth this season. Tom Vesosky, Kyle Douin and Brogan Searle-Belanger all had three hits, and Cam Seymour and Janek Lukzsa each drove in two runs.

Jason Komulainen, Jonathan Wilson and Anthony Poole paced a 14-hit attack in Game 2 with three hits apiece. Poole and Douin each had two RBI.

BOWDOIN 7, BATES 4: Kevin Murray, Gabe Peckler, Luke Chessie, CJ Brito-Trinidad and Liam Foley all had RBI hits in five-run sixth inning that propelled the Polar Bears (14-12, 3-7 NESCAC) past the Bobcats (16-13, 1-9) in Lewiston.

Murray’s RBI double broke a 1-1 tie, and Peckler, Chessie, Brito-Trinidad and Foley followed with run-producing singles.

Brito-Trinidad also had an RBI single in the eighth.

Tyler Attal drove in all four Bates runs, including a three-run homer in the ninth.

Jason Bogdanos earned the win, allowing one run on seven hits over eight innings.

TUFTS 2, COLBY 1: Nicholas Thompson allowed just three hits and two unearned runs in 7 2/3 innings but took his first loss of the season as Tufts (25-6, 10-0 NESCAC) held off Colby (21-9, 6-4) in Waterville.

Tufts pitcher Connor Kinney took a one-hitter into the ninth before singles by Clint Flippo and Cole Palmeri cut Colby’s deficit to 2-1, but Kinney ended the game with his eighth strikeout.

MEN’S LACROSSE

EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE 19, SOUTHERN MAINE 8: Nick James had six goals and one assist for USM (4-12, 2-6 Little East) in a loss to the Warriors (6-10, 3-5) in Willimantic, Connecticut.

Schuyler Wetmore added a goal and three assists.
