The editorial cartoon by Christopher Weyant on Page D3 of the June 4 Telegram, featuring a highway sign welcoming travelers to Florida and then questioning their thinking ability, prompts me to wonder if residents of Florida won’t soon become the most ignorant and least educated of all the citizens of the United States.

They won’t know how to read because all the books will have been banned, and their abilities to exercise free and independent thought will vanish. Their knowledge of history will cease to exist because teachers are no longer permitted to discuss subjects that might have the effect of making white children uncomfortable, and young schoolgirls will panic and fear death by exsanguination if they experience their first menses while at school, because discussion of that perfectly normal bodily function is also forbidden there before sixth grade.

All of this, and other pitiable legislation, has been instigated by Gov. Ron DeSantis and passed by his Republican toadies in the Florida Legislature.

Jim Fossel, in his June 4 column, correctly suggests that we are in need of “bold visionaries” to lead the country. Heaven help us if DeSantis should become the Republican nominee for president in 2024 and succeed. I may not live long enough to see the end result of his turning the U.S. into a macro-Florida, but my children and grandchildren certainly would suffer under such an outcome.
