Wikelman Gonzalez allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, and the Portland Sea Dogs snapped their five-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the Somerset Patriots on Saturday at Hadlock Field in Portland.

Gonzalez didn’t allow a hit until Grant Richardson singled to lead off the sixth. He walked one and struck out five to improve to 3-1 in eight starts for Portland.

Portland took the lead in the bottom of the first when Corey Rosier walked, stole second, took third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler McDonough. In the third inning, McDonough hit a two-run single. Alex Erro added a solo home run and Alex Binelas had two hits for Portland.

Mickey Gasper had an RBI double in the seventh for Somerset.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Aiming to seal his place at the Ryder Cup this month, Matt Fitzpatrick doubled his lead to two shots after the third round in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

Fitzpatrick played the par-4 18th hole perfectly and sank a six-foot birdie putt to card a 3-under-par round of 67. He has a 15-under total of 195 at sun-soaked Crans-sur-Sierre club in the Swiss Alps.

Fitzpatrick leads by two strokes from Alexander Björk, his playing partner on Saturday who shot 68, plus a second Swede, Ludvig Saberg (66), and Connor Syme (65).

XFINITY: Denny Hamlin passed Austin Hill on a final restart in overtime to get his sixth Xfinity Series win at Darlington Raceway.

Hamlin will start his 17th career Cup Series playoff run at the track “Too Tough To Tame” on Sunday night in the Southern 500. He warmed up in NASCAR’s Triple-A series with his 18th career Xfinity victory and first since his last win at Darlington in 2017.

Hill was in front when the race went to a green-white-checkered finish. But Hamlin came from the high side to pass Hill in Turn 2 and went on to a six car-length victory.

FORMULA ONE: Carlos Sainz Jr. was enjoying a perfect birthday weekend so far after he secured pole position for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Italy.

Thousands of red-clad Ferrari fans cheered as Sainz, who turned 29 on Friday, crossed the line 0.013 seconds quicker than runaway Formula One leader Max Verstappen, who is chasing a record 10th straight victory on Sunday.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Erling Haaland scored a second-half hat trick as Manchester City extended its perfect start to the English Premier League season with a 5-1 home victory over Fulham.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: Primoz Roglic beat Remco Evenepoel to win the mountainous eighth stage in Xorret Del Catí, Spain, while Jumbo-Visma teammate Sepp Kuss of the U.S. took the lead of the three-week race.

In a duel of the last two Vuelta winners, Roglic bettered Evenepoel in a sprint to the finish line after a climb up the Category 1 Xorret del Catí. It was Roglic’s first stage win of this edition and his 11th career stage win at the Vuelta.
