A man died by suicide Tuesday after attempting to break into a house on Hampshire Street, Portland police said.

The man, whose identity was not released, was found sitting on a sidewalk near the home around 4:20 a.m. Tuesday. As officers approached, the man began to stab himself, police said.

Police administered first aid but the man later died.
