Is it just a coincidence that the air is starting to feel like Halloween and Eduard van Loenen is on a witch hunt? Or maybe a zombie hunt?

I read his letter (“Voter registration coverage overlooks citizenship verification,” Sept. 24) several times. Each time I was looking closely for something. An important something. Something that is always missing when allegations of widespread voter fraud are thrown around. That something is proof.

Innuendo is fun. Weaving elaborate conspiracies is big fun. Feeling victimized by these elaborate conspiracies is the most fun of all.

Then there’s real life. The reality we all (should) inhabit. The reality where the 2020 presidential election wasn’t even that close. Despite the many recounts, the endless lawsuits, the conjecture, rumor, tantrums and, finally, the failed Jan. 6 putsch. In the end, after all that, Donald Trump simply lost a presidential election. Just like Mitt Romney and Mike Dukakis and Al Smith and many others before him.

Only with Trump supporters do these zombie-conspiracy theories continue to walk the earth forever. Obviously tormenting their minds all these years after the fact. Warping every aspect of life. Even nice, feel-good articles about immigrants becoming more engaged citizens.

I commend the Press Herald for giving us a well-written story about decent people doing their part as Americans. Don’t let the zombies hijack the narrative. Even if it is nearly Halloween.
