We were in Maine last week, and I bought a Press Herald, as I always do. There were two photos from the Fryeburg Fair on Page B1 of the Oct. 3 edition under the headline “HOOFING IT.” Nice photos of kids and animals, but if you folks are going to cover an agricultural fair, you should get photographers who know at least a little about the animals.
One of the photos is of a girl, leading her steer or bull (look under his belly), captioned “… pulls her cow … .” Nope! Cows are female and give milk; bulls and steers (castrated males) are male and are not milked.
Our agricultural heritage is hard enough to hang onto without letting your city readers confuse the two!
