Maine Ultimate’s Lobster Pot event Paul Stankiewicz
SOUTH PORTLAND – A weekend of competitive ultimate action is on tap as Maine Ultimate, in collaboration with the city of South Portland, Visit Portland, Maine Sports Commission, and Revision Energy, will present the Lobster Pot Ultimate Tournament. Set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 22, this event will feature two days of matches and activities for ultimate enthusiasts.
In the sport of ultimate, participants engage in gameplay utilizing a flying disc. The contests feature teams of seven players per side, competing on rectangular fields measuring 70 yards in length and 40 yards in width, each equipped with end zones extending 20 yards deep. The nature of the game ensures that possession of the flying disc can swiftly shift between teams. While athletes typically assume primary positions, they are required to exhibit versatility by mastering the art of throwing, catching, and defending, fostering adaptability and skill diversity.
The tournament will feature divisions for men, mixed, and women, making it an inclusive event for all ultimate players. Rich Young, president of Maine Ultimate, the host organization, and the tournament director, noted that the Lobster Pot has evolved into one of the nation’s largest ultimate tournaments, bringing considerable benefits to local hospitality businesses, including the on-site food truck vendors.
The Lobster Pot will be hosted at Wainwright Fields in South Portland, offering a scenic backdrop for a weekend of competition. The event organizers have planned for a full experience, with multiple divisions and prizes.
This year, the Lobster Pot boasts a lineup of divisions, including three college men’s divisions (Upper, Lower, and Developmental), two college women’s divisions (Upper and Lower), and a college mixed division. Each division will compete for a prize of $1,500, with $1,000 awarded to the first-place finisher and $500 to the second-place team. Teams interested in joining the action can register at a cost of $600, and for programs with a second team, the registration fee is reduced to $400.
If a team has traveled the farthest, Lobster Pot offers them the opportunity to share its journey, and if the claim holds true, the team will gain free entry to the tournament.
According to organizers, participants in the Lobster Pot can anticipate a diverse range of amenities for their experience. These include two full days of ultimate play on well-maintained lined fields. The tournament ensures athletes are adequately fueled with tournament-provided food and prioritizes player safety and well-being by offering on-site trainers. Additionally, participants can benefit from discounted hotel options at various establishments, such as the Casco Bay Hotel, Fire Side Inn & Suites, The Hampton Inn, and Alouette Beach and Resort. The culinary aspect is diverse, with food trucks offering options from PB&Me, El Rodeo, and Eighty8 Donuts. The central area of the tournament provides a Players Lounge and games for players’ enjoyment, complemented by merchandise tents showcasing products from ultimate companies like Lobster Pot, Maine Ultimate, BreakMark, Portland Rising, and Boston Glory. Fans won’t miss out either, as two games per round are live-streamed for their convenience. Lastly, enhanced transportation services, including more golf carts will provide movement for attendees throughout the facility.
Returning by popular demand, Clawdious, the Lobster Pot mascot, will be on hand for photo opportunities, and attendees can capture lasting memories in the event’s photo booth. One of the highlights of the Lobster Pot is the opportunity to claim the $1,000 prize.
