Plan for Wicked Pickle pickleball indoor facility Tony Miner
SOUTH PORTLAND – The Wicked Pickle pickleball facility is planning to open its doors in January of 2024. It is located at 2401 Broadway, right on the South Portland/Scarborough line, and positioned across from the local post office. Tony Miner, the owner of the Wicked Pickle, said, “people have been going crazy about it since we announced it in May when I started sharing it word of mouth.”
The Wicked Pickle is generating anticipation among pickleball players. More than 400 players have already signed up for memberships, which is currently capped at 500. The news around this new indoor facility is growing within the pickleball community.
With construction well underway to meet the January deadline, The Wicked Pickle will offer a total of eight courts, including four designed to professional standards. Miner envisions it as a hub for pickleball enthusiasts to enjoy an array of activities, including tournaments, clinics, and lessons.
In addition to the courts, The Wicked Pickle will also offer a host of amenities to enhance the overall experience for its members. The facility is slated to feature a lounge area for relaxation, a smoothie bar to keep players energized, and a full-service café and a smoothie bar. Miner’s wife will oversee the 3,000-square-foot café which will have a lounge area with TVs. The café will serve beer, wine, and food. Miner said he plans to employ a full staff, consisting of both part-time and full-time employees.
Miner’s vision is to provide a dedicated pickleball facility that caters to both casual players and professional tournaments. Miner said that spaciousness sets his facility apart. He even plans to install bleachers on both sides of the professional courts.
Miner says winters in Maine can make it challenging to find suitable places to play pickleball, and the facility aims to meet that need. The Wicked Pickle promises to become a destination for players of all skill levels as South Portland’s pickleball community continues to grow. With membership slots filling up rapidly, this anticipated facility is poised to make a significant impact on the local sports scene.
Miner said there is currently a lack of a dedicated pickleball facility like the one he is building. He said new construction meant he could design the facility to meet all needs and expectations. His establishment will not only cater to casual players but also be equipped to host professional tournaments with a space for spectators.
“I want people to have fun. That is what this place is for. It’s an indoor facility that is needed around here, people can come and have a good time and be with friends and it is also for people who are competitive about playing,” Miner said.
Miner’s vision extends to offering open access to non-members through scheduled sessions, ensuring that pickleball remains accessible to all. However, Miner said becoming a member at the Wicked Pickle comes with a range of exclusive benefits, including reduced rates for court rentals, lessons, and participation in leagues. Membership options vary from $39 to $99 per month.
