Ben Bragdon’s recent admonition made an important point in a country where more and more young kids are found to be afraid of their surroundings and unsure of their place in the world (“For their sake, we’ve got to let kids be kids,” Oct. 26).
The high levels of U.S. kids with anxiety and lack of confidence issues are a sad testimony to the prevalence of “helicopter parenting” in America. Here in Knox County, we have started several organizations aimed at making our kids comfortable with the world around them by introducing them to the wonders of our rivers, ponds and forests and the wildlife in them. One such organization is the Stewardship Education Alliance, which works with local schools to get the kids out there learning with other kids about the wonderful wild things that exist in our surrounding watersheds and wild areas.
More efforts like this are needed everywhere.
