YARMOUTH — The Penobscot co-op girls’ hockey team made a little personal history Tuesday night at Travis Roy Arena. Now in its second year as a varsity program, Penobscot had played Yarmouth/Freeport four times. The Pioneers lost all four.

This time Penobscot got the upper hand. A three-goal outburst in the second period gave the Pioneers the cushion they needed to come away with a 4-1 win.

“We made it a goal to make sure we skated hard for 45 straight minutes. Sometimes this team turns it on and turns it off. We wanted to make sure they had it on the entire 45 minutes, and they did,” Penobscot Coach Jarrod Williams said.

Both teams are 13-4 with one game left in the regular season, and will be the top two seeds in the North playoffs next week. Thanks to a win over Cheverus, Yarmouth/Freeport will likely retain the top seed.

“One or two, it doesn’t really matter. There’s no home ice anymore for the regionals. It’s just a matter of the color of your jersey,” Yarmouth/Freeport Coach David Intraversato said.

Ahead 1-0 after one period, the Pioneers broke the game open in the second. Jordin Williams’ breakaway goal at 1:47 increased the lead to 2-0, and Paige Oakes’ power-play goal on a rebound at 5:28 made it 3-0. Oakes scored again at 10:09, sliding the puck home while being taken down on a breakaway, and the Pioneers led 4-0.

“We had to put a lot of work in, and it was a team effort,” said Oakes, who also had an assist on Ella Davis’ first-period goal.

Coach Williams said Oakes’ final goal was indicative of the way his team played throughout the game.

“That effort right there, you can’t coach that. You’re born with that,” Williams said.

Penobscot goalie Abbie Derosier was strong, making 28 saves. Williams said Derosier felt like she was out of position on a few goals the Clippers scored in their 6-5 win over the Pioneers last week, and worked to correct that.

“She stood on her head tonight. She really did. She wanted to make sure that didn’t happen again,” Williams said.

Sophie White scored the Clippers’ goal at 12:36 of the second period. Intraversato felt like his team could have been crisper with making and receiving passes. The Yarmouth/Freeport coach also felt like an extra pass would have opened better chances.

“I think (Derosier) saw a lot of our shots dead on. I think if we would have made that extra pass a couple times, we might have put more in,” Intraversato said. “The times we did make the extra pass, we failed to capitalize on it.”

Lexi Wiles made 15 saves for Yarmouth/Freeport.
