I do not understand the reasoning of those Education Committee members supporting a watered-down bill that “suggests” that Maine schools adopt later start times (April 5).
If the science and the testimony of others’ experience have convinced all the committee members that later start times have enormous benefits to our students, why wait for things to change through “organic movement” (as committee member Rep. Heidi Sampson urged)?
How long should kids currently in high school wait for better education outcomes? How many classes of Maine children do we sacrifice to a system we know is substandard, for the sake of “organic” change?
Yes, change is hard, but if it’s the best thing for our kids, then why on earth aren’t we starting now?
