Strikeouts are overrated.
Portland Sea Dogs left-hander Kyle Hart did not record a whiff, but turned in another gem in the Portland Sea Dogs’ 5-1 win over the Bowie Baysox Wednesday night at Hadlock Field.
Hart allowed one run on five hits and a walk over seven innings. His ERA dropped to a team-leading 2.81.
Josh Ockimey and Luke Tendler led the offense. Ockimey was 2 for 3 with a home run, double and walk. His homer to right field was his team-leading eighth. Tendler had been in a 3-for-31 slump but broke out with two doubles and three RBI, including a sacrifice fly. Tendler scored one run, on Donny Mars’ sacrifice fly.
Hart, a 19th-round draft pick in 2016 out of Indiana University, has allowed eight earned runs in his last seven starts. He mixes a fastball with a slider, curveball and change-up.
Jordan Weems relieved in the eighth. After a leadoff single, Weems got a double-play grounder and his 16th strikeout (in 122/3 innings). Trevor Kelley followed with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Bowie is 26-29, and Portland dropped to 21-36, the second-worst record among all Double-A teams (the Frisco Roughriders in the Texas League are 19-37).
NOTES: The announced paid attendance was 3,871 … Bowie and Portland complete their series at 11 a.m. Thursday… Ockimey is batting .350 (21 for 60) in his last 17 games, with four home runs, six doubles and 14 RBI. His eight homers are third among Red Sox minor leaguers, behind Salem’s Bobby Dalbec (13) and Greenville’s Marino Campana (nine) … In Hart’s first outing this year, in the snow, he allowed six earned runs. Without that, his ERA is 2.00.
