Male Athlete of the Year: Grant Hartley, Edward Little Comfortable in any role – quarterback, ace pitcher, slugger or reserve – all the three-sport athlete did was help the Eddies win. Girls’ team Coach of the Year: Paula Doughty, Skowhegan field hockey The Indians won yet another Class A championship – their 15th in the last 17 years. Boys’ team Coach of the Year: Matt Rix, Marshwood wrestling After 34 years of coaching, Rix leaves with 10 team state championships. Female Academic Ace: Jess Brown, Portland The standout softball pitcher was Portland High's valedictorian and is on her way to Penn's Wharton Business School. Male Academic Ace: Cole Smith, Messalonskee The three-sport athlete deftly struck a balance between athletics and academics. Play of the Year: Biddeford boys’ basketball The biggest bucket of the year for the Tigers came from an unlikely source, and won them a playoff game. Beyond the Box Score: Kolton Brochu, Gardiner Kolton Brochu learned to deal with Type 1 Diabetes, and has excelled in football and baseball for the Tigers. Fab freshman: Emily Archibald, Kennebunk Archibald immediately became a team leader, even being chosen as a captain by her basketball teammates. Fall Team of the Year: St. Dominic field hockey After losing in the regional final a year earlier, St. Dom's won its first Class C state championship with an undefeated season. Winter Team of the Year: Edward Little boys’ basketball The Red Eddies captured the Class AA state championship, ending a 72-year title drought.
