A 40-year-old  man was shot during an armed confrontation with two police officers Friday in Medford, about 45 miles north of Bangor.

The episode began in the neighboring town of Milo when Chief Deputy Todd Lyford of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office tried to stop a vehicle driven by a man wanted on arrest warrants. The driver refused to stop and Lyford pursued him at a low speed, Piscataquis County Sheriff Robert Young said in a statement. Milo Police Chief Damien Pickel joined the pursuit later.

The man drove to a home on Partridge Lane in Medford where an “armed confrontation” between him and the officers took place, and the man was shot, the sheriff’s statement said.  The man was receiving treatment at a Bangor hospital Friday night. Neither officer was hurt.

Because of the use of deadly force by officers, investigators from the Maine Attorney General’s office were called to the scene and began an investigation. No other details of the shooting were available Friday night, said Marc Malon, a spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office.

News Center Maine (WCSH/WLBZ) reported that Partridge Lane, off Medford Center Road, was closed Friday because of the investigation and that officers from the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office, Maine State Police and Dover-Foxcroft police were at the scene along with an ambulance.
