PORTLAND — Victor E. Thayer, 77, died Sept. 15, following a brief illness.
He was born in Portland, a son of Richard L. and Rose Marie Thayer. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany where he was a military policeman. One of his fondest memories was escorting President Dwight Eisenhower while he played golf at Augusta National Golf Club.
After his military service, Thayer became a skilled and well-known sheet metal worker in the Portland area. His reputation of quality work led to a job offer as a carpenter at St. Joseph’s Convent in Portland, a job he held for many years before retiring.
He is predeceased by a sister, Judy Fitzgerald and a son-in-law, David Barter.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marilyn Thayer; children Lisa Thayer, Patti Barter and Susan Labbe; grandchildren Anthony, Erin, Nicole and Sarah; and seven great-grandchildren.
At his request, services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island Topsham, ME 04086.
Arrangements are by A. T. Hutchins Funeral & Cremation Services, Portland.
