SOUTH PORTLAND — Getting to city schools got a healthy boost this week with the release of maps for walkers and bicyclists, and a tip sheet outlining safe walking and riding habits.

The maps and tip sheet were sent home with students this week and will also be emailed and posted on the city and School Department websites.

The materials were created by the South Portland Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee, with assistance from the Police Department, Planning Director Tex Haeuser, Maine Safe Routes to School Program, and the Maine Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education Program.

Haeuser said the aids were created to help alleviate traffic congestion near schools, to encourage students to walk and bike to school, and remind students about fun ways to get to school on their own.

The maps designate safe routes within a mile of the city’s seven elementary and middle schools. The tip sheet provides ideas for walking or biking field trips, organizing walk and bike days. and suggestions for safe biking and walking.

For more information on the biking and walking maps and safety tips, contact Jessica Williams and Ben Thompson of the Safe Routes to School Committee  at bikeped@southportland.org, or visit MaineSafeRoutes.org.
