It was another perfect weekend for local football teams, as Falmouth, Freeport, Greely and defending Class C state champion Yarmouth all triumphed and helped their playoff cause in the process.
The Clippers extended their win streak to 17 games and made it 25 of 26 with a 34-6 home romp over Lisbon, in a rematch of last year’s regional final.
In a game where Yarmouth expected a test, it took a 7-0 lead just 15 seconds in when senior standout Anders Overhaug exploded up the gut for a 61-yard TD run. A 1-yard Overhaug TD run made it 14-0 Clippers after one quarter. After the Greyhounds got on the board early in the second, Yarmouth got two more TDs from Overhaug (on an 8-yard run and a 7-yard reception from sophomore Brady Neujahr) to take a commanding 27-6 lead to the break. An 18-yard Overhaug scoring run in the third quarter accounted for the 34-6 final score.
“We practiced hard all week,” said Overhaug, who had 176 yards and four TDs on his 13 carries. “We came out and did our best and it was better than them, I guess. I think the game was closer than the score says. I was expecting a closer game.”
“(Lisbon’s) a very young football team, but very good,” Yarmouth coach Jim Hartman added. “I think sooner or later, they’ll beat us, but not tonight. I’m really proud of this team. It was an intense week.”
The Clippers go to 1-4 Boothbay Friday night. Last year, Yarmouth dominated the Seahawks at home, 63-6.
“We have to focus on the next game,” Overhaug said. “Every game’s important. We have to win the rest of them.”
“We don’t mention win streaks or the other team, just fundamentals and getting better,” Hartman said. “I don’t think there’s anyone we can overlook. There are good teams out there.”
Also in Western C, Freeport improved to 4-1, barely, holding off visiting Old Orchard Beach, 6-0. The game’s lone score came late in the first half when junior James Purdy threw a 16-yard TD pass to senior Kaleb Farmer. The Falcons’ defense did the rest.
Freeport has a big test at dangerous 3-2 Traip Saturday. The Rangers are coming off a big win at Winslow. Last year, the Falcons lost at home to Traip, 26-6.
In Western B, the Greely train keeps marching on. The Rangers made it four successive wins Saturday with a 20-8 triumph at Fryeburg Academy. Greely was up 7-0 at halftime after a short TD run from junior workhorse Svenn Jacobson. In the third period, the Rangers doubled their lead when senior Mike Leeman caught a scoring pass from junior Drew Hodge. After the Raiders cut the lead to 14-8, Jacobson put the finishing touches on the victory with another TD run.
Greely welcomes 0-5 Gray-New Gloucester for its home finale Friday night. Last year, the Rangers blanked the visiting Patriots, 47-0.
Falmouth bounced back from its initial loss with a 46-14 romp at Lake Region. Senior Ryan MacDonald got the scoring started with a fumble return for a touchdown. A short TD run from senior Matt Kingry and a Kingry scoring pass to senior Aaron Rogers made it 18-0 after one period. Two TD passes from Kingry to senior Jack Cooleen, sandwiched around a short scoring run from senior Chris Leete made it 39-0 at halftime. Senior Michael Ryan’s TD run in the third ended the Yachtsmen’s scoring and the Lakers got two fourth period TDs to account for the final score.
Falmouth finished with 413 yards of offense (241 on the ground and 172 passing). Kingry wound up 7-of-8 for 172 yards and three TDs. MacDonald (five carries, 49 yards), Ryan (5-46), junior Will Sipperly (4-38), junior Alex Derhagopian (1-38), Kingry (3-32) and Leete (4-32) were top rushers. Cooleen had four catches for 97 yards and two TDs, while Rogers caught two balls for 54 and a score. Leete led the defense with six tackles, four assists and a sack.
The Yachtsmen host 2-3 Fryeburg Friday. They beat the Raiders, 44-0, a year ago.
