TOPSHAM — William E. Greig, Jr., 94, died May 23 at Cadigan Lodge Assisted Living in Topsham.

Born in Concord, N.H., on Oct. 15, 1915, he was the son of Nellie Edna Atkinson and William E. Greig.  

After graduating from Cony High School in Augusta, he passed on a scholarship offer to attend Bowdoin College, and instead moved with his family to a farm in West Bath where he worked with his father to help pay off the mortgage.  

In 1940 he took a position at Bath Iron Works where he met his future wife, Emily Fox, whom he married in 1945.  

During World War II he served as a Merchant Marine. After the war he returned to BIW and worked in the purchasing department. In addition to his job at BIW, he also sold life insurance on nights and weekends.  

In 1970 he retired from BIW and was elected as a Selectman for the Town of Topsham. Active in his community, he was one of the original founders of the Topsham Sewer District and served as Superintendent until retiring at age 82.

His other community activities included serving as the Tree Warden for Topsham; an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Brunswick; a member of the Masons, the American Legion, and the Topsham Grange; and a member of the Board of Directors for CHANS Home Health Care. 

His greatest joy was his life with his wife and four children.

He was predeceased by his wife Emily in June 2009.

Surviving are his four children, Ellen Stinson and husband Walter of Standish, Henry Greig and wife Cova of Dover N.H., Mona Cunningham of South Windsor, Conn., and Barbara Thompson and husband James of Marshall, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his brother-in-law, George Fox of Topsham.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, May 27 at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church,  Pleasant St., Brunswick. Immediately following the service the family will hold a reception in Codman Hall at St. Paul’s.
