FREEPORT — Alden F. Peckham, 86, died Oct. 24 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
On June 1, 1923, he was born in Lynn, Mass., the son of Leslie H. and Mildred (Lacain) Peckham.
He attended Essex Agricultural School in Hawthorne, Mass., and worked as a machinist at Turner Tanning Leather Company.
In May 1943 he enlisted in the Army and served in the 26th infantry company 1st division, landing in Normandy. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star and was honorably discharged in November 1945.
In July 1946 he married Hope Montgomery. For 30 years he worked at the Boston Naval Shipyard until he retired and moved to Freeport in the early 1970s.
An avid gardener, he also enjoyed wood-working, furniture-making, restoring antique clocks, building and sailing sailboats, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his son, Leslie A. Peckham and his wife Mary of Salisbury, Mass.; two grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held earlier this week.
Arrangements are by Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.
