PORTLAND — The City Council next week will discuss recent changes at the Riverside Recycling Facility, including what can be dumped for free.
The council is also expected to discuss work by the Community Development Committee to develop a recommendation concerning the future of the Maine State Pier.
As of July 1, several changes were made at the city transfer station, including what materials are acceptable for free disposal with a residential e-card. The cards allow for up to 10 drop-offs a year.
Residents are no longer allowed to use e-cards to dispose of remodeling waste and loose materials. City Councilor Cheryl Leeman said she has heard from constituents who are unhappy about the changes. The fee for residents and small commercial haulers to dump remodeling and loose materials ranges from $16 to $24.
City Councilor John Anton said the purpose of the workshop Monday is to discuss a variety of recent changes at Riverside. He also wants to look at changes in cost and service over the past 10 years, he said.
The CDC was scheduled to tour the Portland Ocean Terminal at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The terminal building is located on top of the Maine State Pier.
City Councilor Nick Mavodones, a member of the CDC, said the committee is making progress in its work to come up with a recommendation for reuse and rehabilitation at the city-owned pier.
“At the last meeting we looked at information from the public charette and the council workshop,” said Mavodones. The committee discussed removing the portion of the shed on the south end of the pier and expanding public amenities.
“We got some consensus on some issues,” said Mavodones. “This is an opportunity to update the council.”
The council workshop is scheduled for 5 p.m. July 27 at City Hall. The CDC meets July 22 at 5 p.m. at the Portland Ocean Terminal on the Maine State Pier.
