CHEBEAGUE ISLAND — The town of Cumberland is requesting Planning Board approval to install of radio equipment on the island’s tower at 192 North Road.
The board will hold a public hearing on the proposal during its March 13 meeting at the Chebeague Recreation Center.
The installation will be used for Cumberland police and dispatch services to improve radio coverage from field units in the coastal areas of Cumberland.
Equipment installed would consist of four base radios and a power supply and three antennas on the existing tower. Antenna cables would run to the fire station from the tower using an existing cable tray.
Cumberland Town Manager William Shane said in a memo to the Planning Board that the equipment could serve as a backup radio system should Chebeague ever need repair or replacement.
