2011 busy police year
Lt. Christopher Sanborn of Gorham Police Department on Jan. 24 released statistics for last year.
Sanborn said the department handled 12,810 calls for service, which represents more than 35 per day.
It also investigated 482 accidents; issued 1,493 civil citations; 399 criminal summonses; arrested 226 suspects; issued 789 warnings; and wrote 108 parking tickets.
Besides Chief Ron Shepard and Sanborn, the Gorham department includes four sergeants, nine patrol offices, a detective sergeant and two detectives, two school resource officers, an animal control officer and two administrative assistants.
Woman’s club
to meet
Gorham Woman’s Club will meet Thursday, Feb. 9, at 12:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall in the First Parish Church for refreshments. A representative from Presumpscot Regional Land Trust will speak at 1 p.m. The topic will be “Land Conservation – The Calling of Our Times.”
A business meeting will follow the guest speaker.
Delta Chi, Triad assisting seniors
The Gorham/Westbrook Triad has announced that members of a Gorham fraternity at the University of Southern Maine will assist senior citizens in both communities with snow shoveling.
The Delta Chi Fraternity will shovel paths, steps and mailboxes for senior citizens. Seniors in Gorham can call Ethel Delcourt at 839-3363 and those in Westbrook can call Fred Collins, 854-8327.
Triad is a collaborative effort of senior citizens, community providers and law enforcement that promotes safety for seniors.
The Gorham/Westbrook Triad will meet at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, in the Gorham Municipal Center, 75 South St.
Veterans program
at North Gorham
Pam Turner, Baxter Memorial Library director, will present a program at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the North Gorham Public Library, corner of North Gorham and Standish Neck roads, about Gorham veterans’ memories of World War II.
Turner will speak about the oral history project sponsored by the Baxter library and will show excerpts from interviews with Gorham veterans.

Planning founders festival
The Gorham Founders Festival Committee will meet on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. in the activity room at the Gorham Recreation Department in the Gorham Municipal Center, 75 South St.
Organizers will discuss plans for the 2012 festival, to be held Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26. The public is invited to attend the meeting.

Free USM presentations
The Beehive Collective in Machias will give two, free presentations at the University of Southern Maine, Robie Andrews Hall, Burnham Lounge, on the Gorham Campus 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, and 1-2 p.m. on Friday, Feb.10.
Beehive Collective is a nonprofit, volunteer driven, political arts organization, according to the university. The Thursday afternoon presentation is “The True Cost of Coal,” a graphic-based lecture about globalization, militarization and resource extraction.
And Friday’s prsentation is “Dismantling Monoculture,” a visual exploration of globalization and militarism in the Americas.
During the USM visit, the Beehive Collective will conduct a workshop with a printmaking class and other university students.
Snow dates for the presentations are Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17 and 18.
