The Scarborough Red Storm swelled to an early, 2-0 lead on the road against Cape/South Portland/Waynflete on Thursday evening, Dec. 3, but it was Logan Bruns and her pair of goals that really locked up the W for Scarborough in a furious final period. 5-3 the final as the Storm grabbed their second win over Capeflete in less than a week.

“I hate saying this, but it’s been true: We tend to be a third-period team,” said Scarborough head coach Caitlin D’Amour. “All of a sudden, we’re like, ‘Oh my God, we need to get it together, we need to score, we need to do our systems!’ Also, we’re a young team, so in the first period, sometimes they’re a little shaky. We just had a conversation about confidence, and that will come in time.”

Scarborough jumped to 3-0-1 on the season, while Capeflete slipped to 1-4. The Storm have since picked up a fourth win, over York, and are second to rivals Falmouth in A South. Meanwhile, Capeflete, who also won a follow-up match with York, are third.

Cara Reynolds assisted Taylor Veilleux in putting Scarborough on top late in the first; midway through the second, Reynolds got her own goal, assisted by Lucy Bogdanovich and Lily Nygren, to give the Storm that 2-0 advantage.

“We played Scarborough last Saturday,” said Bob Mills, Capeflete head coach. “And we got outshot 22 to 4 or something like that. So even though we lost this game, I thought it was a much better effort. Scarborough’s a tough team; they were missing some of their top players and they were still a tough team. It’s a good measuring stick for us. I was proud of the way our girls play, especially after Saturday’s game, where we were kind of flat.”

Through all 30 of those minutes, Capeflete found themselves stymied, unable to put a point past Scarborough netminder McKenzie Cormier. Then, during the break, Mills & Co. made a few adjustments, which seemed to spark his girls’ attack.

“Cape’s a really aggressive team, which you need to be aware of,” said D’Amour. “They’ll get right in your face – which is the type of hockey I like – and their goalie is really good. We knew they were going to come out hard, and they came out harder today. Good challenge for us.”

The Storm opened the third with another goal – Bruns’s first, on assists by Nygren and Courtney Brochu – but Capeflete answered immediately back. Bogdanovich had just earned herself two minutes for roughing and skewed the body count in Capeflete’s favor when Sophia Venditti, in close on Cormier, lifted and shoved the puck past the right-side post for 3-1.

As if to redeem herself, Bogdanovich stepped out of the sin bin and onto the ice, where she spent all of 10 seconds skating before she nudged a five-hole goal past Capeflete keeper Abby Joy. 4-1.

“We changed our lines a little bit,” said Mills of the adjustments that allowed Capeflete to produce in the final period. “We moved some players around, and that added a little spark. We’ve had a lot of illness this past week, so a lot of our players were playing at 50, 75 percent.”

Mills specified: “We moved Kate Ginder up from defense to forward, and dropped Abby Ekedahl back on defense. Kate’s mainly a defensive player, but she’s got a lot of experience playing forward.”

Both squads would notch another point before the final buzzer – Bruns got her second with 7:54 to play and Venditti hers with 1:40 – but Capeflete could only keep up, not close the gap, and fell 5-3 in the end.

“There’s little things we notice in the girls,” said D’Amour, again on the topic of her girls finding their groove in the third period. “The way they pass the puck – all of a sudden, they start having their heads up, and they’re doing regroups.”

Scarborough hosts Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland on Wednesday the 9th; Capeflete visits Cheverus/Kennebunk/Old Orchard Beach on Saturday the 12th.
