NORTH BERWICK and ROCKPORT—Local wrestling squads – Bonny Eagle, Windham/Gray-New Gloucester (G-NG) and Westbrook/Gorham – traveled to their respective Regional meets this past Saturday, Feb. 9.

The Northern Regional Meet unfolded at Camden Hills Regional High School in Rockport. Windham/G-NG made their appearance there, ultimately ushering five kids through to the top four and thereby qualifying them for States.

Camden Hills actually took first as a team at the competition, tallying 166 points. Windham/G-NG finished eighth, with 74; 13 teams got on the board, all told.

DJ Pelletier took second for Windham/G-NG, falling 4-1 at 126 lbs. to Caleb Carrell of Nokomis. Owen McDuffie earned third at 138, upending Ben Brewer of Morse 7-3. George Butts took third as well (at 152), defeating Jakob Arbour of Cony narrowly – just 4-3. Andrew Martin also came in third for the team (at 160), winning over Connor Bell of Gardiner by pin at 2:49. Finally, Garrett Allen claimed fourth at 220, losing to John Howard of Mt. Blue by pin at 2:24.

Windham/G-NG is led by head coach John Nicholas.

The Southern Regional Meet took place at Noble in North Berwick, where the Knights themselves prevailed as a unit – and by a healthy margin, too: 205 points to the 128 Kennebunk and Marshwood each accrued for a share of second.

Bonny Eagle finished fourth – an impressive feat, considering just how young the team is. The Scots, who piled up 126 points, comprise almost exclusively freshmen and sophomores.

Caden Frost, one of those freshmen, won at 106 for BE, defeating Elized Soule of Kennebunk by pin at 5:21. Caden’s twin brother Cameron took second at 113, succumbing to Kennebunker Garrett Dickinson by major decision, 10-2. And then there’s Caden and Cameron’s older brother, Colby, a sophomore; Colby captured the title at 120, defeated Sean Moriarty of Marshwood by pin at 5:29.

Morrison Doucette, another freshman, took fourth for BE at 160, falling to Chris Pilcher of Noble by pin at :17. Andrew Thomas, the Scots’ lone senior, took fourth at 170, losing to Henri Kuntz of Westbrook/Gorham by forfeit. Finally, Jakob Harriman earned bronze for BE at 285, overcoming PJ Excel (Noble) by pin at 5:24.

Bonny Eagle is led by head coach Josh Lund.

Westbrook/Gorham came in 12th, with 55. Beyond Kuntz’s third-place take, there was Zach Davis’s fourth-place take at 106 for the team. Davis lost by pin to Alex Marchand of Noble at 1:52. Gabriella Taylor took fourth as well (113), falling by pin to Dylan Mulligan of Noble at :15, as did Nicco Pappalardo (120), who fell by pin at :47 to Jaden Balcewicz of Noble.

Peter Grant is the Westbrook/Gorham head coach.
