PORTLAND — The second phase of expansion at Maine Medical Center is now headed to the city’s Planning Board.
MMC spokesman Matt Wickenheiser announced June 25 that plans have been submitted for the construction of a 2,450-space parking garage at 222 St. John St.
“Following this plan submission, MMC will meet with the Planning Board, numerous city departments, neighbors, and local businesses to present plans and gather input,” Wickenheiser said.
The garage, adjacent to Union Station Plaza, is intended to replace the garage on Gilman Street currently used by hospital staff, Wickenheiser said. MMC hopes to begin construction in the fall and complete the work by late 2019.
The removal of the Gilman Street garage and replacement with new patient care facilities is the third phase of the $512 million project.
