WESTBROOK – The dynamic backfield duo of Andrew Lavallee and Donald Clark was at it again Saturday afternoon, accounting for both Cape Elizabeth touchdowns to lead the Capers to a 14-13 victory over the Westbrook Blue Blazes in a Western Maine Conference Class B football game at Westbrook High School.

Lavallee scored on a 9-yard run in the first half and Clark went in from 2 yards out for the only score of the second half to help the Capers move to 4-1 on the season.

Cape Elizabeth has now won four straight since a season-opening 14-6 loss at Wells.

The Blue Blazes dropped to 1-4.

“I watched these guys on film and they are good,” said Capers coach Aaron Filieo. “They have physical kids that want to play, they have some good athletes and they’ve just been unfortunate in a lot of games that they’ve played. I just knew that the game they were going to put it together was going to be against us.

“I expected it and I tried to get our guys to understand that they are a good football team.”

It was the Blue Blazes who signaled early that the Capers were in for a tough game when they drove 91 yards for the opening score on their second series of the day.

The six-play drive featured a 50-yard run by Ryan Lebel and concluded with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Terry Webber to Aaron Duncanson to give the home side a 7-0 lead.

Cape Elizabeth answered on the next series.

Clark and Lavallee ran the ball on eight of the nine plays it took to cover 77 yards to score.

The drive, which took 4 minutes and 30 seconds, culminated in Lavallee’s touchdown.

“We expected a competitive game and it certainly was physical,” Blue Blazes coach Jeff Guerette said. “We knew it was going to be physical and we prepared our kids for that — getting 11 guys on the football and understanding where Lavallee was.

“We did most of the things we talked about over the course of the week, so I was pleased with that.”

Another extended Westbrook drive gave the Blue Blazes the lead and took up most of the final 6 minutes of the second quarter in the process.

Webber, who passed for 117 yards and ran for another 53, orchestrated the scoring drive, going six for 12 for 70 yards in the air and rushing the final 9 yards for the touchdown.

The extra point was missed and Westbrook led 13-7 at the half.

The Capers surged into their first lead of the game on the opening series of the second half.

Clark finished the 10-play, 64-yard drive with his touchdown. The series included an extra point by Matt Ross, which proved to be the difference in the game.

A tightened defense and the combination of Clark and Lavallee were ultimately too much to handle for the Blue Blazes.

Westbrook was limited to just 60 yards of offense in the second half while the Capers’ backfield ran for 156 yards, churning a lot of time off the clock.

“I’m so happy that we played a team today that has the same amount of heart that we have,” said Clark, who carried the ball 25 times for 109 yards.

“Any other day, these guys win.”

Lavallee finished with 170 yards rushing (103 in the second half) on 22 carries.
