“Bill” was born in Superior, Wisconsin on June 6, 1941, a son of Robert L. and Annabelle (Frazier) McCabe. He grew up in Superior, graduating from Superior High School.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Machinist Mate “A” School, and was stationed at Davisville, Rhode Island.
It was while in Davisville that he met his future wife, the former Barbara Ann Zebrowski. They were married on Feb. 28, 1965, and had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.
In earlier years, Bill was a diesel mechanic for Lombard Trucking in Waterville, Connecticut. He then began a 20-year career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1995. Bill loved to fix things! Whether it be a car, snowmobile, tractor, or anything with an engine, fixing it was his job.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother who died at birth.
He is survived by: his loving wife of 50 years, Barbara McCabe of Springvale; three sons, Michael McCabe and wife Teasa of Ft. Hood, Texas, Robert McCabe of New Hampshire, and Edward McCabe of Arundel; two daughters, Jennifer Rosell and husband Kevin of Wells, and Karen Thibodeau of Lyman; five sisters, Roberta Morningstar of Minnesota, Margaret Quamn and Mellissa Meade of Nevada, Victoria Carpenter of Virginia, and Kathleen Stevens of California; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be on Monday, Sept. 14 from 6-8 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 10:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Springvale.
