PORTLAND (AP) — Maine’s largest city is the only one in New England to get a winter ranking of “severe” in a new misery index.
National Weather Service meteorologist Barbara Mayes Boustead created an index to judge the severity of winters based on snowfall and plunging temperatures. She calls it a misery index.
Detroit was the clear winner, with the most extreme winter since 1950. Portland was the only city in New England to rank as “severe,” one notch below “extreme” and ranked 17 out of 64 communities.
