AUGUSTA — Authors of a new report say Asians not only add to Maine’s quality of life, but also enhance the state’s economy.
The Maine Center for Economic Policy released a report today that says Asians’ contribution to Maine’s economy is increasing. In 2007, Maine Asian-owned businesses had sales and receipts of $284 million and employed more than 2,500 people.
The liberal research group’s report says Maine’s Asian population doubled in the 1990s and increased yet again by 49 percent in the past decade. It says Asians and Latinos are the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the U. S. population.
The policy center’s Deborah Felder says that in the future, Asians will play a significant role in Maine’s economy.
In 2009, the group released a similar report on Latinos’ contributions to Maine’s economy.
