RUMFORD — The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is urging people who find young animals in the wild to leave them there.

The phrase “If You Care, Leave Them There” is aimed at fawns, robins, raccoons, moose calves and other young wildlife.

Spokeswoman Deborah Turcotte says people often stumble upon young animals and mistake them for being abandoned. She says the animals are most likely waiting for adults to return with food.

Turcotte tells the Sun Journal newspaper if people believe an animal is abandoned they should call an Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist.

She says people should not take wild animals home.
