TOPSHAM — Mason Brigham converted a penalty kick with two minutes left in overtime to lift the Mt. Ararat High School boys soccer team to its first win of the year, 1-0 over Camden Hills in Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference play on Tuesday at Riverside Field. 

Ewan Alexander created the opportunity for the Eagles (1-2). He gained control of the ball and made a move on a Windjammer (3-1) defender. Alexander was taken down just inside the penalty area. 

“This was a total team effort,” said Mt. Ararat coach Jack Rioux, whose Eagles visit Mt. Blue on Thursday at 6 p.m.

James Singleton had six saves for the shutout, while Camden goaltender Casey Messer made three stops. 

Brunswick 9, Edward Little 0

The host Dragons turned a 2-0 halftime lead into a runaway, powering in seven second-half goals for the KVAC win over the Red Eddies.

Josh Musica staked Brunswick (4-0) to a 2-0 edge. 

“We could have easily been tied or even down at that point,” said Brunswick coach Mark Roma, whose Dragons visit Camden Hills on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. 

In the second half, Milan VanLeer assisted on the next two Dragon goals — one each from Sebastian Miguel and Lane Foushee. Zeke Spiro picked up a goal, while Alfonso Miguel and Coenradt Taylor finished with two goals each. 

Goaltender Jack McDiarmid had nine saves for the shutout. Mack Sampson and Connor McLean combined on 12 saves for EL. 

Medomak Valley 4, Morse 0

Zach Cheesman scored two goals to lead the Panthers (4-0) over the Shipbuilders (0-4) at Waldoboro in a KVAC contest.

Ian Doughty and Coleman Swain each had a goal for Medomak Valley.

Brenton Cahill made eight saves in goal for Morse, which fell to 0-4 and hosts Maranacook on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Girls soccer

YARMOUTH — Cat Gould scored the game’s only goal as Freeport downed Yarmouth, 1-0, in Western Maine Conference play.   

The host Clippers outshot the Falcons, 18-13, but goaltender Leah Rusiecki turned away all 18 to preserve the shutout and Freeport’s fourth straight win to open the season. The Falcons head to York on Friday at 4 p.m. 

Gould’s goal came on a penalty kick at 19:43 after Yarmouth was called for a handball inside the penalty area.

Brunswick 3, Edward Little 2

Isabella Banks scored the winning goal late in the second overtime to lift the Dragons (3-1) past the Red Eddies at Auburn in KVAC play. 

Betty Bakkila and Molly Taub scored a goal each in the win, while Lanye Brewer earned an assist. 

Brunswick keeper Aisley Snell had five saves.

Desiree Roussel and Breya Whitman picked up a goal each for Edward Little (1-2). Alexander Annear had six saves. 

The Dragons host Camden Hills on Thursday at 5:15 p.m.

Morse 2, Medomak Valley 2

At Waldoboro, Sadie Cohen scored late in the first half as the Panthers played to a KVAC deadlock with the Shipbuilders. 

Emily Martin and Nicole Brazee scored a goal each for Morse, which stands at 1-2-1 and hosts Maranacook on Thursday at 7 p.m. 

Martin gave Morse a 1-0 lead 4:01 into the game off an assist from Brook Kulis. Anne Vannoy tied the game for Medomak Valley, but Brazee staked the Shipbuilders to a 2-1 lead. 

Abby Sreden had 10 saves in the Morse goal, while Panthers keeper Kayla Donlin made three stops.

Wiscasset 1

Jazmine Ryder and Jayce Cole scored in the first half to power the visiting Phoenix past the Wolverines.

Wiscasset, 0-5 and slated to visit Winthrop on Thursday at 4 p.m., received a goal from Eliza Paradis in the second half.

Girls volleyball

WINDHAM — Brunswick/Mt. Ararat (1-3) battled hard in a close 3-1 loss to Windham. 

The Dragons, who fell by set scores of 25-14, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21, were led by senior Lauren Whitlock with 18 assists, five aces and three digs. Kassidy Dixon chipped in nine digs, while Sabrina Cooper had four kills and two aces.

Brunswick/Mt. Ararat hosts Portland on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Field hockey

GORHAM — Bowdoin College returned to the win column with a 3-0 shutout of the University of Southern Maine. 

The Polar Bears, ranked seventh in the Division III national rankings, improved to 4-1. 

Kara Finnerty found Emma Stevens for the game’s first goal 10 minutes into play, and the Polar Bears doubled their lead before halftime on a Manveer Sandhu goal. 

Finnerty completed the scoring with four minutes left in regulation.

Bowdoin hosts Wesleyan on Saturday at 11 a.m.

York 2, Freeport 1

Abby Dixon scored from Bailey Oliver, and Lexi Brent put back a rebound for a goal as the Wildcats (5-0) scored both their goals against Freeport (2-2-1) during the first half and beat the visiting Falcons.

Freeport is slated to host Fryeburg Academy on Thursday at 6 p.m. 

Lawrence 3, Morse 0

Cass Richards, Hayley Niles and Lexi Lewis scored goals to lead the Bulldogs over the Shipbuilders in Fairfield.

Ashtynn Stewart and Victoria Dunphy added assists for Lawrence (5-0). Emma Poulin had six saves for the shutout.

Emily Myers had 10 saves for Morse (2-2), which visits Lincoln Academy on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
