BRUNSWICK —  Matty McColl converted on a tie-breaking penalty kick in the 74th minute to lift the Polar Bears to a 2-1 win over visiting Thomas College on Monday afternoon.

Bowdoin climbed to 5-3 after handing the Terriers just their second loss (9-2) of the season.

The home team controlled play in the first half, outshooting the Terriers, 13-5, but neither team was able to convert. Chris Kingston shut down a promising Thomas bid in the 39th minute, challenging a 50/50 ball with a sliding stop.

The Polar Bears broke through 1:08 into the second half. Justin Miller serviced Drake Byrd with a cross, setting Byrd up for a midair volley to best Thomas keeper Jonathan Dutka.

MacQuille Walker nearly put Thomas on the board three minutes later with a close range shot the curled just beyond the opposite side post.

The Terriers evened the game in the 55th minute. Following a corner kick, the ball rattled around in the box before Kyle Patterson trapped it and fed a short pass to Adam LaBrie at the top. LaBrie put a quick touch on the ball to skim a shot through the defense.

McColl gave Bowdoin its final lead of the day with a successful penalty kick in the 74th minute.

Dutka ended the day with 11 saves in net for the Terriers, while Kingston made four stops for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin held a 25-10 shot advantage and 10-3 edge in corner kicks.
