CAPE ELIZABETH – Kimberly Monaghan-Derrig is the sole candidate on the ballot for School Board in Tuesday’s town elections, while Michael Moore and Frederic Sturtevant are campaigning as write-in candidates.
Two seats are open this year. Incumbents Rebecca Millett and Linda Winker are not seeking re-election.
Monaghan-Derrig, 51, a graduate student at the Muskie School of Public Service and a ballet instructor, said she wants to encourage innovation and ensure quality education with minimal tax impact.
Monaghan-Derrig, who made an unsuccessful run for Town Council last year, said other priorities are the search for a superintendent to succeed Alan Hawkins and pushing the state closer toward its commitment to fund 55 percent of school costs. She has a child in the school system.
Moore, 39, an investment analyst who will have three children in the town’s schools, said his skills will be particularly useful when the schools face funding and budgeting challenges.
He wants to make sure to have a longer-term vision in areas like professional development even as the district struggles with shorter-term financial pressures.
Sturtevant, an information technology developer and advisor, wants to make sure the district finds a superintendent who is a strong leader and who can work cooperatively with others.
Sturtevant, making his third run for School Board, also said he’s fiscally responsible.
He is the father of a student in the Cape Elizabeth school system.
