Matthew and Michael Deveaux of Brunswick both won state championships with the Maine Moose under-18 and under-16 teams this past November, earning the opportunity to compete at the 2017 USA Hockey Nationals April 5-10.
Matthew’s U-18 team competed in Lansing, Mich., while Michael’s U-16 squad was in Dallas.
The U-16 team was eliminated from the tournament after pool play. They won their opening match against the Carolina Stars (4-3) before losing to the Dallas Penguins (3-0) and the Chesterfield (Missouri) Falcons (6-1).
The Penguins were the eventual winners of the tournament.
The U-18 team was undefeated going into the finals with impressive wins over the Chesterfield (Missouri) Falcons (5-1), the Junior (Arizona) Sun Devils (7-1) and the Alaska Wolves (8-3), along with an 11-2 victory over the Fort Wayne (Indiana) Elite team in the semifinals, putting the Moose into the title game.
In the final against the New Hampshire Avalanche, the Moose came away with a tightly-battled 3-2 victory to become the National champions.
This victory marks the end of Matthew’s youth hockey play. He was a standout on the Brunswick High School boys hockey team and attends Thomas College in Waterville.
Meanwhile, Michael will be a member of the Maine Moose U-18 team next year with an opportunity to defend their title, along with being a senior on the Brunswick High School squad.
