An event to promote eliminating cigarette butt litter in Portland has been rescheduled because of heavy ice in the city.

A city spokeswoman says about five dozen “Sidewalk Buttler” cigarette dispensers were recently installed around the city. The tubular receptacles resemble mustachioed butlers and have mouth-shaped inserts where smokers can dispose of cigarette butts.

The event scheduled for Portland City Hall on Wednesday has been rescheduled for Monument Square at noon on Thursday.

City officials, business owners and a representative from the Natural Resources Council of Maine will gather to demonstrate how the buttlers work.

The council says the butlers are “a sensible, easy way Portland is tackling cigarette butt litter.”
