SCARBOROUGH — Milani Hicks scored 24 points and the Scarborough boys’ basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 64-54 win over Windham on Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

Hicks scored 16 points in the second half and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Red Storm improve to 7-5.

“I thought we played good as a team,” Hicks said. “Coming off a couple game losing streak, we tried to adjust some things, play more as a team. I thought everyone played well and played up to their potential.”

Added Scarborough Coach Tony Di- Biase: “(Hicks) is such a good defender, he does so many other things that people forget about. His better basketball is way ahead of him.”

Windham started the game in a zone defense but switched to man-to-man in the second quarter. Millington put senior Troy Davis on Hicks. Davis face-guarded Hicks and was able to slow him down in the second quarter.

“(Davis) did a decent job on him,” said Windham Coach Kevin Millington. “Hicks is a good player.”

Windham had three players foul out in the fourth quarter: Davis, Kyle Kilfoil and Markus D’Andrea (12 points).

“It was a little tough,” said Hicks. “I just tried my hardest to get open. Once he fouled out, that was a big game changer.”

Scarborough dominated the first and third quarters, outscoring Windham (6-4) by a combined 28-15.

“It was a tribute to our toughness,” DiBiase said. “This is what I call a ‘grinder game.’ Both teams are tired, three games in a week, and I thought the kids came through and played pretty well.”

Nate Wessel scored 15 points for the Red Storm, but his biggest contribution was on defense. Wessel was able to slow down Windham’s 6-foot-4 guard, Kevin Weisser, holding the lefty to 14 points.

“Nate made a big difference guarding Weisser,” said Hicks.

Added DiBiase: “(Wessel) did a really nice job, made him work for everything he had. That was the key to the whole game, I thought.”

Ryan Gorham finished with 15 points to lead Windham, including three 3-pointers.

“Scarborough played better than we did tonight,” Millington said. “But we fought until the end, had a couple of looks there at the end to cut the deficit a little bit closer to a one-possession game, but we didn’t make them.”

Scarborough is off until Friday at Bonny Eagle.

“This gives us a chance to practice because we haven’t been able to practice,” DiBiase said.

“We played four games over vacation, three games this week, so that’s seven games in two-and-a-half weeks. That’s a lot of basketball games with no practice time, really.”
