Some years several Mainers have connections to the Oscar nominations, but not this year.

Only one major nomination announced Thursday morning had a clear Maine connection.

Dan MacKenzie, a Gorham High School graduate, was among the team of animators that worked on the film “The Boxtrolls,” which was nominated in the category of animated feature film.

He was one of more than a dozen animators on the film, so his name does not appear on the nomination. MacKenzie, 26, lives and works in Portland, Oregon, and Burbank, California.

Another former Gorham resident, Eric Saindon, failed to get a visual effects nomination this year after earning two the past two years.

Saindon, who lives in New Zealand now, was nominated in 2014 for “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and in 2013 for the “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” Saindon, 44, didn’t win either time.

Saindon’s latest film, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” failed to earn him a nomination Thursday. He was visual effects supervisor on the film.

The nominees in all 24 Oscar categories were announced Thursday morning at a news conference in Beverly Hills.

The Oscars will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 22, and televised live on ABC at 7 p.m.
