Governor says fiscal indicators point to brighter prospects for economy
Gov. John Baldacci says the 2010 legislative session ended on a positive note, and he sees brighter times ahead.
In his weekly radio address, Baldacci said the session ended with a bond package that can put people to work and strengthen Maine’s economy.
He said state revenue is beginning to slowly recover, with March revenue above projections. A Westbrook business, Idexx, is expanding, and the Stinson sardine cannery in Prospect Harbor might reopen. Baldacci said the economy is still fragile, and it’s critical to make investments to prevent further decline.
In the GOP response, House Minority Leader Josh Tardy said the fiscal pain is not over. With the end of the stimulus program and heavy investment losses in the pension fund, the next Legislature may need to cut another $1 billion or more. That’s about one-fifth of state spending.

Special state ceremony bestows honors on 41 Maine war veterans
Eleven former prisoners of war were among the 41 veterans to receive special state honors Saturday afternoon.
The former POWs, mostly from the Lewiston-Auburn area, received State of Maine Silver Star Honorable Service Medals during a presentation for veterans of World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Eighteen Silver Star recipients who could not attend were also recognized during the ceremony.

Nova Scotia man takes first place in Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race
Trevor Maclean of Nova Scotia won the 44th annual Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race on Saturday, the Bangor Daily News reported.
Maclean, 33, beat 11-time champ Robert Lang of New Brunswick.
Maclean finished the 16-mile race in 2 hours, 19 minutes, 5 seconds, while Lang was second in 2:23:46. Jeff Owen of Orono and Steve Woodard of Cumberland paddled their two-man racing canoe to third place in 2:31:27, while Ray Wirth of Belfast was fourth in 2:38:49.
The win was Maclean’s sixth over the past nine years. He finished second the other three times he competed.
A total of 889 paddlers in 479 canoes and kayaks entered the race.
