Ibram X. Kendi, a leader in anti-racism work, will deliver the keynote address at the University of Southern Maine virtual commencement ceremony May. 8. Kendi, the author of “How to Be an Anti-Racist,” is a professor in the Humanities at Boston University and the founding director of the BU Center for Antiracist Research.

During the ceremony, which begins at 9 a.m., each of the 1,665 members of the Class of 2021 will be honored through the awarding of eight doctorates, 240 graduate degrees and 1,237 undergraduate degrees

USM will also bestow honorary degrees upon Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia and co-founder of the Fair Labor Association, 1% for the Planet, the Textile Exchange, the Conservation Alliance, and the Sustainable Apparel Coalition; Timothy Wilson, the senior advisor and director of the Maine Seeds Programs, and David and Beverly Worthington, co-founders of The Worthington Scholarship Foundation.
