A lawsuit filed by a designer at Bath Iron Works who claimed he was harassed and discriminated against by fellow workers at the shipyard has been settled.
A notice of a settlement between Husam D. Abed and Bath Iron Works was filed in U.S. District Court last month and the lawsuit was dismissed Wednesday. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
Abed sued in January, claiming that he was singled out for harassment because of his Palestinian ethnicity and because he is Muslim. He said the actions against him reflected “the anti-Muslim culture at BIW.” He cited examples of co-workers spitting on and defacing an Afghan flag displayed in the yard and claimed he was subjected to hate speech directed against the prophet Mohammed.
Abed worked at the shipyard from 2007 until he resigned last year because of emotional distress.
The lawsuit did not specify the damages Abed was seeking, but federal lawsuits of this type are usually for cases in which more than $75,000 is sought.
BIW spokesman Matt Wickenheiser said the shipyard had no comment.
